Night 21 on The Rock and Roll Highway with Nellie Wilson and Lone Wolf | Madison, WI | The Frequency | Covington Rock

The search for live music in Madison, WI brought up a show at The Frequency with Nellie Wilson.  The name grabbed me instantly and images of her in a country skirt puffed out with petticoats got my attention and I checked out some of her music.  I was sold.  The funny, sarcastic & sometimes raunchy stories pulled me right in and I knew that this was the show.  When I chatted with Terri, she hesitently told me that she wasn’t wearing the petticoat skirts anymore that she had gone for less cutesy and more honesty.  All right, even more sold.  I showed up to The Frequency and got a taste of the sounds to come during their soundcheck.  This was going to be a great night.

Terri’s vocals are like a warm dream of butterscotch, she sings of her life and the lives she sees.  She sings of heartbreak and despair and the joy in a $2 pint.  She sings the stories of life and damn she sings them well.  And her band.  HER BAND.  The Hellbound Honeys are tight!  That fiddle – oh that fiddle!!  and those perfect slaps on the upright bass.  and the harmonies..oh those harmonies…they just pour over you with a silky flow.  I’ve found my dream in a honkey tonk, country, sweet sounding band right here.  Her songs are anthems for us all.  I cannot stop listening to her cds.  Buy them here, you will not be disappointed!

Ready for the most lovely versions of ‘you are my sunshine’ you’ve ever heard?  and a few jokes!

Next up was Lone Wolf, a one man raucous cabaret of sound.  His voice has that gravely roughness that I love about Tom Waits and the sound is brusk and in your face.  Bruno is a master of about 4900 instruments that he plays at the same time.  His music makes you stop your feet at the revivalist celebration.  The show is sensory, with the words of the songs taking a backseat to the feelings of the songs.

Night 5 of The Rock and Roll Highway | Albuquerque | Covington Rock

It was already afternoon by the time I woke, the night had been a gloriously late one with The Dirty Creek Bandits and Tyrannosaurus Chicken peeps and I didn’t make any plans for the next city after their show.  It was a Sunday, so I figured it would be my off day/night.  Have a leisurely drive and stop wherever I felt like it.
As I lay their chilling in the hotel bed (I splurged and got a room), I had an itching in my fingers and I pulled the technology closer….  I keyed up the map and saw that Albuquerque  was a little over 4 hours away.  Hmmm.  Albuquerque.  Hmmm.  I had a great time in that town on the 98′ cross country tour, very hospitable town (thank you Lee Francis).  I typed “Albuquerque live music” into the search bar, expecting nothing,  yet the first thing that popped up was Cactus Tractor at the Skarsgard Farm Folk Circus Festival!  All those words sounded amazing and awesome.  I used the Facebook search option and soon was grooving to a few beautiful tunes rich with a vibrant clarity.  How could I not experience this?  I found Cactus Trucker’s email address and sent them a message and hopped out of bed to pack.  By the time, I had thrown all my things in a bag, I had an email from the band telling me to drop on by the circus and I jumped in the car and pointed Elvira west.
Bye Texas!                                                                Hello New Mexico!

The evening skies in New Mexico are a site to see.  It is epic in the vastness of beauty.  Land and sky going on and on, forever, and I lucked out with a sunset sky full of big white puffy clouds.  Love this part of the world.  I could easily get lost in creating landscape images like Phil Hawkins (well, not like Phil, he is incredible…but to dream to make images like Phil…..) but I was on a mission, a musical mission and so I snapped with my phone and let my camera relax till showtime.

When I arrived, I met up with Meredith Wilder of the band Wildewood (they had played earlier in the day) and she was coordinating the event with Skarsgard Farms.  She gave me a lay of the land, I had found myself in the middle of a desert circus and it was gorgeous.  Jugglers, aerialists, musicians and revelers were everywhere.  I had definitely found the right spot to be on this night of The Rock and Roll Highway!

The band that attracted my music photography loving self to the event was Cactus Tractor and from the images on their site (great band photography) and the clips that I heard, I knew I was in for some great music.  It was a treat reading their description on their Facebook page.

Cactus Tractor is a seven-person Bohemian Pop Folk Disco (beau-pop-faux-disc) band based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with four songwriters, toothsome harmonies, and a multitude of fun stringed and unstrung instruments. These include, but are not limited to, the hula horn (invented by Christy), the musical saw (which is dangerous), the violin (which is also dangerous if you’re standing just to the left), the accordion (which is heavy), the charango (which attracts a lot of attention despite its small stature—much like its player, Stef!), buckets-and-buckets-full of harmonicas (which often fall on the ground and cause great consternation), frogs (which croak when struck with a stick—try it out!), and tea towels (which, laid artfully over a snare drum, make for a proper English quiet-funky kit sound). “

As the Albuquerque Aeraelist Collective flew over head Cactus Tractor gave a rocking, folky, bluesy, fabulous show with some of the most beautiful harmonies I have ever heard.  They all played like a bajillion instruments as well (as listed out in their description above) and wow, those voices, they played their voices.  They weren’t up there merely singing, they were adding layers upon layers upon layers to the music with their song.  Their voices were all as finely tuned as the instruments they strummed, beat and blew.  I want to lay outside in a big grassy field, or more aptly on a blanket with the wide world all around and lay there and just listen and listen to them.  They somehow capture the sound of this part of the world, the music is as vast and encompassing as the land stretching out for miles and has a warmth and beauty to it like the setting sun while also being so clear and pure and simply beautiful as a Prickly Pear bloom.   I am enamored.

Tarrant at Sound of Music | Covington Rock

Tarrant got the Bonnie Bishop Listening Party / Recording Night off right!  They are rock with a touch of a southern drawl.  Good solid music to groove to, to get your listen on with. I want to blare this music while driving at night down a winding country road with tall trees that still allow glimpses of the stars to peek through.
& to prove just how good their vibe is, Russell made friends with a squirrel at the end of the night.

Jay Leibowitz Band at Pianos | Covington Rock

Whenever Jay Leibowitz calls, I come running!  He is a talented force, a rocker, an actor, a writer and most definitely a performer!   Piano’s was packed for the rocking show and it was fun to get to NYC for this show!  Timing is everything and I’m so happy that I was able to make it.  Jay and his merry band of music makers brings a no holds bar excitement to a show.  They are having fun rocking the f*ck out for the people who come and I simply adore everything musical that Jay puts together.

Strongbow, Hot Air Affair and One Truth at The National | Covington Rock

I was psyched to get down to the National to see Hot Air Affair (then known as To Be Found) open up for DNA. The National is a stunning space to create images in and Hot Air Affair just keeps upping themselves at each show!  Somehow each one is the best show!  So I knew that I had to see them rock on The National’s stage.

When I got there, the door man said that they were already on stage and almost done with their set!  I have never gotten a camera set up that quickly before.  Huge relief to rush in and not see a familiar face on the stage.  They had them confused with the band that went first.  I got to catch the last bit of Strongbow‘s funky rock set.

& then it was time for Hot Air Affair & they brought it.  They pulled the crowd in.  Everyone was up front and dancing.  They play with the energy and enthusiasm that combined with great music makes for one helluva show!

I was just getting ready to skedaddle when JC of One Truth played some operatic cords and started singing.  I was at the back saying my goodbyes with my camera gear all packed and I think that I stopped mid sentence to turn around and stare at the stage.  Passion and emotion and longing and excitement and joy and sadness, a kind of musical opera.  Nothing that I was expecting to hear that night and I grabbed my gear and went up to listen to the story!  Lots of talent in this band, I was hooked.

Beer is the Answer | Covington Rock

Fitting that I discover a love for shooting through beer glasses at the #1 Beer venue in the USA!  MEKONG.

Enjoying the sounds of Mekong Xpress and playing with my friends beer glasses.  I find the rich ambers and pale ales give quite a different glow to the scene.   🙂

Jackass Flats, Sturgeon City and Tarrant rock The Broadberry | Covington Rock

I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating!  The Broadberry is EXACTLY what RVA has been needing.  It is the perfect spot for anything from a birthday party to a fashion show to a night of rock!  I was very excited to finally see some live music play the big stage, especially with one of my forever favorite bands, Jackass Flats headlining.  The place was packed and everyone was smiling.  How can you not?  They have candied bacon.  & it is as delicious as you think it is!

The Broadberry, Candied Bacon

Another great thing about The Broadberry is the incredibly long bar and awesome staff.  There are great people behind the bar AND a lot of them!  What other venue in town can you actually get to the bar and order a drink easily during a packed show???

The Broadberry Staff

Tarrant started the evening off right with their Americana Rockin’ style.  I adore Jordan Tarrants voice, rich and emotional, he weaves a story that pulls you right.  The band is made up of all star players in Jared Pool, Chrissie Griffith, Dusty Ray Simmons, Craig Harmon & Russell Lacy.

Next up was Sturgeon City.  They had played a softer version of their rocking string grass set for The Broadberry’s ‘soft opening.’  On this night,  on the big stage in the back, their set got a whole lot louder, more rambunctious and rocking.

The first two bands had everyone at The Broadberry pumped!  Have I mentioned what an awesome space it is yet?  Haah.  The Broadberry brings the happy!

Everyone was pumped for Jackass Flats and they brought all the badassery that makes the crowd want to dance about in jubilance and glee.  Their rocking, mischievous bluegrass sound makes it impossible to stand still, you have to dance.  Have to.  It is hard for me to stop for a moment to make a good image.

The Ricecookers at Piano’s | Covington Rock

As a photographer, I love getting to venues early to see the opening bands play so I can get a sense of the space, lighting and mood of the night.  As a music lover, I love getting to hear bands that I might not have come across otherwise!  The band rocking before Jay Liebowitz at Piano’s was  THE RICECOOKERS and they brought the energy.  Hair flying, sweat spraying, hard hitting drums and a pounding bass got Piano’s on their feet.  I loved the bilingual songs and they prove that music is its own language because I didn’t need to understand everything to get into their sound.

Music at Baja Bean / Covington Rock

Well, this is a bittersweet blog entry.  A few weeks ago The RVA was rocked by the Von Shakes.  It was one of my favorite weekends with them!  (close 2nd is the middle of new york state college weekend….  The lap dance room at that backwoods bar!!!  Wow!)  At any rate, the RVA weekend was tops. They had a blast. RVA had a blast.  & then I saw them a week later and they told me they broke up.  I’m so bummed writing this because I missed their last show, which happened this past weekend in NYC.  I had 10 events/people to create images of this past weekend and just could not get up there.  Sad.  I remember their very first show in NYC and how quickly they just grabbed my attention and kept it.  A damn good band and its just a damn shame that the music industry makes it easy for autotuned assholes who spend their time creating tabloid headlines while real musicians and talented performers have to scrape by and struggle to hopefully get a few pennies from itunes. I hate this side of the music biz..the side that forces the exceptional to grow weary and over it.  There are too many bands that should be where some of this radio bullshit it.

Ok, rant over.  I ❤ these guys.  The von shakes showed me mad respect as a photographer and friend and I hope that maybe…one day…there will be a reunion show.  If BooB can get back together for a show after 5 years (sold that out, duh!) then I have faith that I may get to see VS rock again.

Till then…  The Baja Bean show!

The Von Shakes had been included on the eves bill by the vendors!  Thanks!!  I had never seen them before and was psyched because the badass Stephen Kuester was going to be sitting in on the slide guitar.  Oh yeah, I like it when SK plays that slide.  It nice.  The good ole boys took the stage and introduced the Von Shakes to some nice honkytonkin’ rocknroll!  Dug their sound and their songs.  Again – THIS is what is needed in music.  Good storytelling with a good show and damn fine music.  (ok, not going to let myself starting ranting again!) So go see them when they play next, you’ll love it.

& then some of the guys from one of my 2014 fave bands, Tarrant, took the stage.  Jordan Tarrant always brings great stories to life with his rich voice and he was joined by  Jared Pool on mandolin & Russell Lacy on guitar.  These guys know how to weave some magic together.
